An Appcues alternative that guides on request
Appcues is a no-code tool for product tours, modals, checklists and in-app messages, aimed at product and growth teams that want to ship onboarding without engineering time.
At a glance
| Aspect | Wayhint | Appcues |
|---|---|---|
| Type of tool | AI guide that reads the live page | Product tour tool |
| Pricing (published or reported) | Public: Free, $149/mo, $499/mo, Business from $15k/yr (early access: billing not open yet) | Not published on the pricing page (Start plan up to 3,000 MAU; Grow and Enterprise on request) |
| Free plan | Yes, up to 500 monthly active users | No free plan listed; free trial, no card |
| How guidance is created | None. Pepper reads the live page on every step and learns the app from observe mode and the explorer | Flows are built in a no-code builder |
| When the UI changes | Reads the live page each step, so there are no flows to re-record. It can still pick a wrong element, which we measure | Flows target specific elements, so a changed screen can mean editing the flow |

Which one fits
What Appcues does well
- Polished modals, tooltips and checklists
- Targeting flows to user segments
- Mobile app flows as well as web
Choose Appcues if
- You want designed announcements and onboarding that you push to users on a schedule.
- You need flows inside native mobile apps.
Choose Wayhint if
- You don’t have a team to write and maintain flows, and don’t want one.
- Your UI ships often and guidance should keep up without re-recording.
- Your users arrive with a specific task in mind, in their own words.
- You want to start free and see prices before talking to anyone.
- You want the option to run the guide in your own infrastructure (planned for Business).
Be aware
Wayhint is new. It works in web pages only, has no surveys or NPS, and goal analytics are still being built. It guides; it doesn’t replace a full adoption suite.
The main difference: who writes the guidance
With Appcues, guidance is typically built in advance: someone decides which journeys deserve it, then builds them. That gives you control over wording and order, and it takes time on each journey and when screens change.
With Wayhint, nobody has to write the journey. The user says what they want, and Pepper decides one step at a time from the live page, using an app map learned from observe mode and an explorer run. You can still add short notes and flows, but nothing depends on them.

Questions about switching from Appcues
Can I switch from Appcues to Wayhint?
Yes. Add the Wayhint script tag next to Appcues, try Pepper on the pages where people get stuck, then remove the old tags when you are ready. Wayhint doesn't need authored flows, so there is nothing to migrate first.
Is Wayhint cheaper than Appcues?
Wayhint publishes its prices: free up to 500 monthly active users, $149 and $499 per month, and Business from $15k per year (early access: billing isn't open yet). Appcues, as of October 2026: not published on the pricing page (Start plan up to 3,000 MAU; Grow and Enterprise on request). Check the vendor for current pricing.
What does Wayhint not do yet?
Wayhint is new. It guides in web pages only (no desktop apps), has no surveys or NPS, and goal analytics are still being built. If you need those today, a mature platform may fit better.
